Getting Lost in the Organized Chaos of Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo

Located near the Hachiko exit of busy Shibuya Station, this massive crossing in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward is a landmark in itself. Imposing TV screens overtake the intersection from above, where swarms of people cross from every direction possible. It's where Tokyo's youth, nightlife, fashion, and business collide, and a perfect location to get lost among millions of swift-moving people. Try wandering aimlessly like Charlotte in Lost in Translation, head to the top floor of a building for an birds-eye aerial snapshot, or grab a latte at the Starbucks cafe overlooking the crossing. This urban madness feels rather natural, orderly, and quintessentially Japanese.

If you could take just one photo: the center of the crossing

Shibuya crossing is the gateway into the heart of Japanese youth culture and a reflection of the wildly eclectic and chaotic energy that defines Tokyo. Day or night this young hub of all things hip, pulses with the heart of Japanese pop art, nightlife, and fashion. Watch from the second floor of the adjacent Starbucks or mingle in the crowds as thousands hurry across the conglomeration of streets with each change of the traffic lights. The organized madness is an interigal part of the Tokyo experience as partygoers, fashionistas, businessmen, hipsters, and travelers alike rush to make it to the other side. Shibuya crossing is the place to meet for a night on the town or an adventure into one of Tokyo's most popular wildly amazing areas.

If you could take just one photo: Shibuya Crossing

Thanks to Lost In Translation, this intersection has become renowned for its unique feature: stopping traffic in every direction imaginable. Although the intersection does become as crowded as sardines in a tin can, the rush of people goes and comes in waves. I was lucky enough to be able to stretch my arms out, without hitting a single soul, (and snap this photo) for a total period of five seconds before a sea of people came hurtling towards me, as they anxiously awaited for the crosswalk signal to change from a red hand to a walking green person.
