Watching American Theater History Unfold at Steppenwolf in Chicago
Founded in 1974 by acclaimed film actor Gary Sinise (and his high school chums Rick Argosh and Leslie Wilson) in a Unitarian church in Deerfield, Illinois, the Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become one of the most well-regarded professional theater companies in the world. Based in Chicago proper since 1980, Steppenwolf has debuted seminal plays from Sam Shepard's 1982 hit True West to ensemble member Tracy Letts' 2007 smash AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, while launching the careers of famous actors like John Malkovich, Joan Allen, Martha Plimpton, and Laurie Metcalf.
