Eating Tiny Pancakes While Being Creeped Out in San Francisco, CA
Sears Fine Foods is for tourists. It’s over-priced, there is usually a line, the dreary lighting is in strange juxtaposition with their pool-tiled floor, and they invite you to win sodas by playing their slot machine on your way out. But silver dollar pancakes make you do funny things. Sears serves them “Swedish style,” which means they come thinner, smoother, and with lingonberries. You could do better at IHOP or even IKEA if you have the need for Swede on a regular basis. But trying “the San Francisco Tradition” just once in your life as a local couldn’t hurt. Especially if you like being stared at by turn-of-the-century family portraits while you eat. Sears has a wall of them, adjacent to the back wall displaying a 13-star American flag. Like you do.
