Stopping for a Beachfront Snack on Hwy 187 to San Juan, Puerto Rico
Savvy beachgoers driving the half hour between San Juan and beautiful, family-friendly Luquillo Beach take the long way home for the fried snack stands, open-air bars, and little crescent beaches on scenic Highway 187, which connects San Juan to the rickety beach communities of Loíza and Piñones. Gorgeous, sun-drenched beaches and lush, green forests alternate with coco frio shacks and pastel-painted bars, mostly peaceful and deserted on weekdays. On weekends, however, these vibrant roadside warrens seethe with vendors frying crab alcapurrias over open fires; locals downing fruit shakes and cans of Medalla Light; and live bands (or just stereos) blaring salsa — all to the continual thrum of traffic backed up for miles in either direction.
