Overlooking the Inca Trail from Sayaqmarka Ruins in Peru
Machu Picchu is far from the only ruin to be reached by hiking the classic Inca Trail. Built atop a precipitous mountain spur with only one entry at the top of a long stairway, Sayaqmarka lies with a quiet anxiety—a compact maze of rooms, plazas, and baths overlooking a vast space hemmed by white-capped mountains in the far distance. Wary Inca once looked out from their sanctuary to see who approached their quiet isolation. Nestled in the masonry, between the dark-colored stones, delicate yellow orchids christen the high walls with nature’s laugh, indifferent to friend and foe alike. —Written by Shara Johnson
