People Watching at the Saturday Market in Eugene, Oregon

The Eugene Saturday Market has been in business since 1970, making it the oldest open-air market in the country. (Some of the vendors seem to be wearing the same tie-dyes as they did on that first rainy Saturday.) The market is open rain or shine, April through mid-November, Saturdays and Sundays in downtown Eugene. Hundreds of craftsman, artisans, and palm readers are crammed tattooed-shoulder-to-shoulder in the main shopping area. There's also a food court with everything from sweet, sticky elephant ears to egg-salad-like pate from Toby's Tofu Hut; a stage with music and miscellaneous performances all day; and a farmers market across the street with veggies, flowers, and honey from local farms. Come for the shopping, stay for the people watching.

The people & culture

The most amazing part of photographing the Saturday Market is how welcoming the people are to allow for photos. There is so much color and diversity. I love how warm and friendly everyone is. The day I decided to venture out with my camera I was drawn towards the drum circle. Everyone had a big smile on their face and a peace sign. Everyone was family. It was quite beautiful as an outsider looking in. I was almost jealous I wasn't more mentally involved like everyone else and instead hid behind my camera.

The people & culture

The most amazing part of the Saturday Market is the people. There is so much color and diversity. The market is open Saturdays and Sunday almost every week. There are many little privately owned booths selling everything from handcrafted jewelry to handmade clothing. There are many food/beverage booths to meet anyone's desired appetite. Entertainment is always available with live music shows and a drum circle. So many different smiles, styles, ages, and cultures come out to the market. The many walks-of-life that venture to these events are what make this market what it is.
