People Watching at the Saturday Market in Eugene, Oregon
The Eugene Saturday Market has been in business since 1970, making it the oldest open-air market in the country. (Some of the vendors seem to be wearing the same tie-dyes as they did on that first rainy Saturday.) The market is open rain or shine, April through mid-November, Saturdays and Sundays in downtown Eugene. Hundreds of craftsman, artisans, and palm readers are crammed tattooed-shoulder-to-shoulder in the main shopping area. There's also a food court with everything from sweet, sticky elephant ears to egg-salad-like pate from Toby's Tofu Hut; a stage with music and miscellaneous performances all day; and a farmers market across the street with veggies, flowers, and honey from local farms. Come for the shopping, stay for the people watching.
