Seeking Favor From the Sun at Inti Raymi in Cusco, Peru
The revival of the spectacular Inca Festival of the Sun—Inti Raymi—takes place in Cusco near winter solstice (June). Performed in three stages, the last part takes place at the Inca fortress, Saqsaywaman. Flag-bearers run along the terraces, and the ancient battlefield below, whose blood dried long ago, is filled with lively musicians, elaborate dancers, club-wielding soldiers, maidens with offerings, and small burning fires. Amid the dizzying cacophony of color, movement, and music, the regal king, on a raised platform, lifts a sacrificial llama heart to the sun. The surrounding hillsides are carpeted in spectators eager to glimpse the magnificent ceremonial life of their ancestors, those who pleaded with the sun each year, “Please do not abandon us.” —Written by Shara Johnson
