Getting Ready for a California Closeup on Santa Monica Beach
California’s beaches are a sort of intoxicant. Redolent with salty ocean breezes and the smells of food wafting from the boardwalks, they gently rock their sun-worshipping children in a cradle of summertime. Break out your camera—and your patience. A photo tour along the three miles of Santa Monica Beach State Park would take a lifetime, because each step brings a perfect West Coast moment in Kodachrome tones—green palms swaying in an impossibly blue sky, the crashing of foam on the park’s golden shores, the leisurely twirl of the pier’s Ferris Wheel. The Pacific unrolls like an azure carpet, interrupted in the hazy distance only by Catalina Island and its fittingly named township of Avalon—the magical land beyond mysterious waters.
