Scoring Treasures and Trinkets in Healdsburg, California
The sprawling, acres-big Healdsburg Salvation Army is truly junk-hound heaven if your idea of bliss is pawing through mountains of other people's personal debris. The Sonoma County wine town just happens to also be the distribution point for other regional Salvation Army locations, so this one has the motherlode. The huge property is divided into specific areas for clothing, trinkets, and furniture—plus the exceptional outdoor raw-intake area, where an unholy dog's breakfast of random stuff is heaped across a tarped parking lot full of tables. There's also an enormous open-air souk of $1 clothing items, all neatly arranged on hangers. Before you start, eat a good breakfast and stay hydrated—this experience elevates thrifting to extreme sport status.
