Birdwatching in the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge in Willows, CA
With the mysterious Sutter Buttes and snowy Mount Lassen and Shasta in the background, and dozens of species of migrating waterfowl to be seen, it’s worth braving frigid winds and tule fog to visit the 35,000 acre Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge between November and January. Watch as hundreds of honking Snow Geese settle like white confetti into the refuge’s seasonal marshlands, preferably with a cup of hot coffee in your hands. If you don’t spot the spectacular Sandhill cranes here, check out the rice fields just outside the refuge.
