Feeding the Tarpon in Islamorada, Florida
As roadside attractions go, Robbie’s Marina is bona-fide Florida kitsch, coconut strewn, and just the kind of place Jimmy Buffett sang so lustfully about when he still called these islands home. In the shallows of the marina, tarpon school in the green waters surrounding the dock like a great silver-lined cloud. Tarpon, one of Florida’s premier game fish, are capable of reaching Superman proportions in excess of 175 pounds! Drop a dead herring into the water and these mighty fish will explode. Fishing from the dock is an intolerable offense. Feeding them by hand, however, has become as much of an island tradition as key lime pie.
