Getting Close to Big Cats at Shambala Preserve in Acton, California

Lions and tigers, oh my! No need to be fearful of these wild big game cats. At this private 80-acre animal sanctuary north of Los Angeles, you can get closer to nearly 70 exotic felines than at any zoo, all under the watchful care of volunteer guides. Founded in the 1970s by actress Tippi Hedren (star of Alfred Hitchcock's films "The Birds" and "Marnie"), big cats who were abandoned and abused are rescued and given lifetime shelter, food, and veterinary care. These include lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, cougars, servals, lynx, and bobcats, all separated in cages by species. Guests are allowed to tour the grounds and photograph these magnificent animals during scheduled three-hour long Safaris, held one weekend each month.
