Seeking Relief from the Heat on Sweet Gum Trail in Red Top Mountain State Park
Red Top Mountain State Park is just an hour outside of Atlanta, but the hilly, tranquil trails through the forest around Allatoona Lake provide an easy escape from the grind of city life. With trails ranging from less than a mile to 5.5 miles, hikers of every fitness level will find a way to enjoy the blooming surroundings. The lakeside trail, convenient to the park office, is wheelchair accessible (and therefore also good for those with small children in strollers). It takes visitors for a pleasant loop by the lake and the historic Vaughn Cabin, and there are also convenient docks for fishing and swings and benches to savor the views. The Sweet Gum Trail is 3.5 miles and close to both the park office and the visitor center parking lots. It twists and turns through the forest, bridges several streams, and provides relief from the summer heat thanks to the shade of the impressively tall old trees.
