Hunting for Alaska Brews in Juneau
With a couple of hours to kill in port, Jake and I were on the hunt for some of the Alaska brews we had seen other people drinking. After clamboring out of the taxi and sending off the kids with my parents, we stood face-to-face with the Red Dog Saloon. That was definitely a sign. A rugged bouncer pointed at a table around the corner and shooed us in to talk to the next couple waiting to get in. Sawdust crunched unevenly under my feet and my eyes were fixated on the heads mounted on the walls above: reindeer, fox, moose. There was even a stuffed bear climbing a pole to get at some boot-covered mannequin legs. Wow. A waitress brought the menu. Eureka! They had our beer. We ordered an Alaskan Amber Ale and an Alaskan White...and chased it down with reindeer sausage pizza. It was unbelievably good. Just don't tell my kids we ate Rudolph, please!
