Wandering With Fewer People Than Butterflies in Costa Rica
The journey to Rara Avis, a rainforest reserve deep in the Costa Rican jungle is circuitous, consisting of a lengthy travel combination by tractor, foot and horseback. What you find is an adventurer’s wildest dream: remote, pristine, and modernity free (you'll spend evenings by the light of an oil lantern). Jump into a locals-versus-visitors soccer game and become one with the mire: this pitch is more bog than meadow. Slip on your lodge-provided Wellies and wend along the muddy trails searching for toucans, vipers, and sloths with your personal guide. After traipsing through the labyrinth of plant life, strip down and take an invigorating dip in a nearby waterfall. For the moment, you’ll lose sight of civilization—and not just because it’s out of view.
