The heart of Puerto Varas is all Chile, but the taste buds are distinctly European, thanks to the city’s German founders who baked an infinite number of flavors—strawberry, rhubarb, and murta for starters—into a sweet pastry and named it kuchen. Serious kuchen connoisseurs can ignore the whitewater rafting, hiking, and sailing that Puerto Varas offers; forgo the major food groups, and spend a day going from restaurant to restaurant in search of the perfect slice of kuchen. At some point you may reach satisfaction and believe that you’ve found it, but really you should loosen your belt a notch and try one more slice—just to be sure.
