Eating Pie for Breakfast in Port Orford, Oregon
From the window of your room at the Castaway by the Sea Motel, you can see the morning light move over the wrinkled cliffs, hear the water lap on the sand, and watch fishing boats being lowered by crane from the dock into the ocean (only about six ports in the world do it this way). If you’re lucky, you’ll see a gray whale making its way around the big rock in the middle of the bay, and if you’re smart, you’ll have saved a piece of marionberry pie from dinner the night before at Port Orford’s famous Crazy Norwegian fish house. There’s something topsy-turvy about this seaside town that makes pie in the morning taste absolutely right.
