Dodging Four-Wheel Drives on Polihale Beach in Western Kauai

A long beach along the western shore of Kauai, Polihale State Park is a vast, untamed stretch of sand. While its expanse is a sight to see, Polihale is wild—its beach drops off abruptly into rough waves below. (Swimming and other water activities are unsafe here.) Stretches of sand are imprinted with countless four-wheel drive tracks, as residents zoom up and down to get to where they want to go. It's definitely more of a local spot, and you'll see much more trash strewn around than elsewhere. It's strangely akin to an oceanside highway: trucks roam free like they have the right of way, and the "look left, look right before crossing" rule applies here. While this isn't really a beach where you can search for seashells and sunbathe on the sand, it's a spot where you'll find locals letting loose under the sun—on foot and on wheels.
