Marching With the Ants for the Best View in Bend, Oregon
It rises above Bend like a giant anthill dotted with ants. Take a closer look, however, the ants are actually people of all ages, sizes, and colors, many with canine companions. Some of the people wear backpacks or carry hand weights; others push toddlers in strollers. All of them, along with their dogs, walk, run, jog, or slog up and down one of the two trails leading to the 500-foot summit of Pilot Butte. Walking the Butte is a friendly activity—those going down smile and say something encouraging to those going up, and those going up grin and grunt something back. Dogs stop and sniff one another regardless of which direction they’re headed. When you reach the top, take a moment to admire the 360-degree view of the city and the Cascade peaks in the distance. Then it’s down the trail with a promise to return, as the ants go marching on.
