Sleeping in the Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters in Pescadero, CA

Four little cottages with comfortable living rooms, large communal kitchens, and a hot tub on the cliff comprise the Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel. It’s a wonderful opportunity to stay the night at this iconic coastal monument. The sound of the ocean will lull you to sleep and early morning walks open your eyes to a world of wildlife and tranquility. Spend some time at the point, letting the salt-saturated air settle on your face, and it’s possible to feel transported back to a time before modern technology, when captains safely steered their ships to shore with the pulse of the lighthouse as their only guide.

“You can travel the world, but nothing comes close to the golden coast”: It is so easy to sing Katy Perry’s hit California Girls while driving to Point Pigeon Lighthouse. About 50 miles south of San Francisco, the coastal drive along Highway 1 will uplift your spirit to a melody. It is hard not to fulfill your curiosity by momentarily looking down the cliff to glance at the white waves as it violently crash through the landscape. Then you realize: “that’s how the California coast sings to me.” At the end of the challenging curves of the road, you will be greeted by a towering lighthouse on a cliff. A sight of romance. You will fall in love.

If you could take just one photo: Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel

A quiet lighthouse hostel nestled on an ocean cliff between San Francisco and Santa Cruz, California, Pigeon Point is waiting for you to introduce yourself to locals and world travelers. You might talk with a couple who has taken the year off to cycle from Washington state to Argentina or a backpacking college graduate from Croatia as you chop vegetables to stir fry in the communal kitchen. Discounts are provided to guests who use foot power to walk or pedal themselves to this gem of a resting spot. Make sure you reserve your time for the hot tub!

Swirling gray waters and talk of shark-attacks can sometimes sway the average explorer from trying something new. But not a group of 8th grade boys! At Pigeon Point Lighthouse, there is trail that leads right to the water's edge, where I and my shivering students pondered over sea anemones, got starry-eyed over starfish, and smiled at the seaweed. The ocean sounds were enough to quiet the mouths and spark the minds as we explored this hidden world, whispering our finds to each other and hopping from one rock to the next. As the sun set, coloring the pools gold and green, we all marched off together, excited for tomorrow, when the tide pool world would open up to us again.
