Ascending an Active Volcano in Quito, Ecuador
You can't help but notice the cold, jagged peaks that clutch the city of Quito in its bosom as your plane makes the descent to the suffocated runway. The eastern slopes of the active volcano Pichincha cradle this South American city in its arms, like mother with child. Both peaks of this sleeping giant are visible from the city, and will certainly give those brave enough to endure burning lungs, sore thighs, bitter mountain winds, and the possibility of being covered in hot volcanic ash a view of South America they'll never forget. Let the teleférico from Quito to the base of Pichincha at 12,000' do the hard work, and climb the rest of the marked trail to the top. You won't be disappointed.
