Pondering the Secrets of an Ancient Lava Rock Temple in Maui, Hawaii

Of the many sights along Maui's magnificent Hana Coast, few can compare to the Pi‘ilanihale Heiau, an enormous temple shrouded in mystery, its true origin and purpose unknown. From the Hana Highway, you drive down unpaved 'Ula'ino Road and enter the lovely Kahanu Garden, where you follow a self-guided tour with stunning coastal vistas. As you emerge from the forest, suddenly the colossal heiau (temple) looms into view. Visitors are forbidden to step onto the sacred heiau, the largest in Polynesia. Even from a respectful distance, you're astonished by the towering lava rock walls and can feel their spiritual energy. Centuries seem to melt away as waves crash against black lava cliffs, and the ghosts of kings whisper through swaying coconut palms.
