Biting Into History Where the French Dip Was Born in Los Angeles, CA

The stories vary, but diners from all walks of life know Philippe the Original as the birthplace of the French Dip. Step down into Philippe's (as it's known locally), pick a line, and place an order familiar to generations of Angelenos: a beef "double dip" (or "wet" for even more jus), a side of slaw, lemonade, and perhaps a slice of pie. With practiced ease your server assembles your meal, and within minutes you take your tray, cross the sawdust covered floor, and hunt for a seat. Sitting at a communal table, you ask your neighbor to pass the sinus-clearing spicy mustard. At Philippe's, it might even be the mayor who hands you the squeeze bottle.

Sawdust on the floor, no servers, an hour drive, and huge lines no matter what time of day it may be. What would ever possess you to venture into this dilemma? The home of the original french dip sandwich. Just down the street from Union Station, Philippe's has been opened for nearly 60 years and completely family owned. There are no condiments on the table, no salt and pepper, and no au jus sauce on the side; and you don't need them! Their doubled-dip beef sandwich is the most popular. At first sight it looks so simple, but at first bite that smokey, tangy taste hits you unexpectedly and your entire mouth waters. It's more than moist, its juices drip down your fingers as you devour the succulent meat. No fries, no coke, and no extra au jus needed. The double-dip will satisfy your soul and keep you coming.

If you could take just one photo: Philippe the Original

If you are looking for a high-class establishment with glamour and glitz, this spot is not for you. If ordering at a countertop, or carrying your own food is a problem, go elsewhere. If you are uncomfortable with sawdust shavings by your feet, or sitting in wooden booths and bench seats, stay away. But, if you want the tastiest French dip sandwich in Los Angeles, then Phillipe’s is right up your ally. The menu never changes, except for the soup du jour, but it never disappoints either. Although they feature beef, pork, lamb, ham and turkey sandwiches, they also have a delicious chili, salads, tons of sides, homemade deserts, and a decent beer and wine selection – two HUGE thumbs!
