Standing on the Verge of Almodóvar’s Kitschy Madrid
Madrid is to Pedro Almodóvar as Manhattan is to Woody Allen. More than a movie set, this crazy mixed-up city is both muse and protagonist… Cast yourself in his films just by meandering through the streets: the Rastro flea market (Labyrinth of Passions), the Plaza Mayor (Flower of My Secret), the Gran Vía (Women on the Verge)… And, if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of the director at some of his favorite haunts: Bar Cock, Museo Chicote, Ducados Café, Bocaíto (Almodóvar called this tapas bar “the best antidepressant I know”). Check out the props at the funky furniture store, La Oca. And what better way to pay homage to Pedrito than by catching a flick at his favorite movie theater, the precioso art nouveau Cine Doré (where the provocative silent movie played in Talk to Her).
