Your floppy hat and sundress are no good in the so-called Paris of the South. The Palermo Hipódromo is a beautiful, swanky racetrack with seats for over 10,000 cigar-puffing porteños, but is not as ritzy as Buenos Aires claims. The Gran Premio Nacional is the Buenos Aires Derby held every year during mid-November and the track usually fills with families and friends happy to spend a day out in the sun with a gourd of mate. Enter a bet with the word apuestas, but unless your Spanish is flawless, make sure to keep a good eye on your horse. If you lose to the track don't fret. Downstairs is a seemingly endless casino filled with over 2000 twirling, flashing slot machines.
