Taking a Baroque Sort of Break at Schönbrunn in Austria

Gods linger amid the foliage. Sculptures of ruins and war's spoils gleam in the sunlight—reminders of the glory that the Habsburg family won for itself, along with the cost. Grassy slopes lead up to the Gloriette, crowning the hill above Schönbrunn. Looking out, Vienna spreads to a horizon only interrupted by Stephansdom's gothic spire. The Gloriette's café allows visitors to enjoy coffee and tortes and the sense of history that comes from a morning pick-me-up where Kaisern and Kaiserinnen took their own repasts.

If you could take just one photo: World's Oldest Zoo

Schönbrunn is home to the world’s oldest zoo. It was first created as a menagerie in 1752 and in 1778 was opened to the public. What makes the zoo special is that it manages to hold its old world charm while dazzling modern visitors. It offers highlights like two giant pandas out of 44 outside of China. There is also a simulated rainforest and a large cat experience that allows the predators to walk within inches of the visitors. When a break is needed a coffeehouse in the zoo is a stunning example of baroque design and an ideal spot to enjoy a cup of Viennese coffee.

  • Britta Pichler Hi Adam. Vienna has so many secrets. The snow globe was invented there. Vienna produces excellent wine. Things like that. I look forward to sharing more info

  • Adam Rugel (Editor) Did not know Vienna had the first zoo
