Pitching a Tent at Nickerson State Park, Massachusetts
Sure, you could spend hundreds of dollars on accommodations to stay in a cozy bed and breakfast during your time on Cape Cod. Or you could get back to your primeval roots and pitch your tent for a few bucks per night while living amongst the trees and ponds that make this park so appealing. Nestled in the elbow joint of the Cape's arm, Nickerson State Park is like an inland retreat from the coastal dominance (and crowds) of the peninsula. Go for a swim in the kettle ponds that dot the park—formed thousands of years ago by receding glaciers—or just rent a canoe and do a little exploring. If you are a fisherman, the ponds are stocked with eager trout all year long. Trails abound here; vast Cape Cod Bay is within easy hiking or biking distance and the Cape Cod Rail Trail traverses the park on its way to the Atlantic side of the peninsula .
