If you could take just one photo: New Hope

The entrance to the eclectic, historic town of New Hope, PA is the green, toll-free bridge spanning the Delaware from Lambertville NJ. Innocuous at first glance, all day long its steel trusses beckon the creative ions radiating from both valley towns. Early morning sun-stars flitting across the water will blind your senses straight. A midday stroll will breeze away all complaints. And romance oozes in the evening’s rosy glow, even among the giant carp in the muddy depths below. “Like the Bridge to Oz” I told my nephews and niece as we crossed the open fretwork of the bridge, the jeep’s wheels whining harmoniously with the water slap against stone stanchions. Silently observing, they soon sighed and agreed. It does feel like a bridge to a place to be free.

Think the only titillating thing in this beautiful river town is the duck salad at Mother’s Restaurant? Then you haven’t done a lot of window shopping on Main Street. New Hope is full of artists, bikers, and other liberal-minded locals, so it’s no surprise that they have a number of places where you can buy something scandalous. You’ll find handmade leather clothes at Le Chateau Exotique (27 West Mechanic Street) and a few naughty nighties over at Grownups (2 East Mechanic Street). You might giggle when you walk into these shops, but you’ll have a wry smile on your face as you walk out with your bag in tow.
