Putting Through the Kitsch at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois

For most locals, Navy Pier is to be avoided at all costs. This festival of kitsch is home to a giant Ferris Wheel, cheesy chain restaurants like Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., far too many ice cream stands, over-priced carnival rides and funhouses, and throngs of tourists who've come to gawk at it all. But amidst the madness, there's a little bit of fun, found at the Pier Park Miniature Golf course. Practice your Tiger Woods putt on an 18-hole Chicago-themed course that winds its way around the base of the Ferris Wheel. It's a bit of old-fashioned fun that even locals will wade through the Navy Pier mayhem to enjoy.

Navy Pier, Chicago

Perched a little over a kilometre long, surrounded by the tranquil waters of the stunning Lake Michigan shoreline, is Navy Pier. It's history is ingrained deep into the wooden structure, with it once being built for entertainment in 1916, a navy training centre, an embarkation point and a college classroom. Today, the brisk air off the water is fresh and delightful in your lungs; it's winter now, however the imagination doesn't need to work hard to visualise the sun beating down on these desks and amusements during summer. There is a plethora of activities and dining experiences awaiting your senses; it now hosts a 150 ft ferris wheel, museums, mini golf and theatres, just to name a few. With the overwhelming "tourist attractions" that Navy Pier has to offer, the entertainment of this place is an obvious choice but above all of the crowds that flock here, theres something about this place that allows a view of Chicago and the lake that you'll want to capture.

If you could take just one photo: Navy Pier

Whether you are visiting Chicago for the first time or have been living in Chicagoland for years, riding the Ferris Wheel with your loved one, offers you the perfect seats for watching the best show the city has to offer - it's hustle and bustle in the evening twilight. You take a break from your busy day, sit back and relax while the setting sun paints the sky crimson, the traffic soars on Lake Shore drive and the high rise buildings downtown glitter and gleam. One ride on the Ferris Wheel takes 7 minutes for one complete rotation, costs only about 6 dollars and offers panoromic views no less spectacular than the ones from the John Hancock Tower and the Sears Tower observatories . As you look around, while perched up high above Navy Pier, surrounded by the waters of Lake Michigan, you will find yourself wishing that you didn't have to be on your way back down so soon.
