Moving Through History in Glasgow, Scotland

Gypsy caravans, modern day police cars, vintage Volkswagens, a train car that carried royalty to the Scottish Highlands, early motorcycles, toy cars, trams that once ran the streets of Glasgow, and models of the huge ocean liners that once carried the name and craftsmanship of the city on the Clyde around the world: you will find all this at Glasgow's Museum of Transport. Bringing all this together, and almost hidden in the midst of the museum, is an interactive set of exhibits that allows you to take on the identity of a Glaswegian of times past and see the choices you’d have faced as you planned and paid for getting to work, going on a holiday, or visiting your sister in another town.

Museum of Transport

If you can use it to get around by land or by sea, you can learn about it here. Glasgow's Museum of Transport boasts a broad collection of cars, bicycles, and even locomotives from different eras, as well as hundreds of model ships. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, showcasing not just the evolution of transportation but, in some cases, the individual owners of certain eclectic vehicles, from hippie vans adorned with bumper stickers and wild paint jobs to sleek racing bicycles. It's easy to get nostalgic for the classic designs and styling of the past as you roam the exhibits and even enter some of the vehicles for a close-up view. But the museum also doesn't gloss over the historic hardships of travel, including the potential for accidents and, as documented in one display, the "horrible" food served on 19th-century passenger trains.
