Provoking Thought With the Weirdest Museum in Los Angeles, CA
Resolutely weird, the Museum of Jurassic Technology combines the oddity of curio cabinets, the sincerity of pseudo-science, and the enveloping strangeness of an obsession with lush, sensuous displays to be a museum like no other. Past the tiny foyer, a video kiosk traces the evolution of Natural Histories in a tone that might just be sarcastic, but, like everything else in the MJT, it's impossible to tell. Past that, there are threaded multimedia meditations on the geometry of memory and song, on medieval alchemist Athanaisus Kircher, and on the "hyper-symbolic cognition" of old wives' tales. Dense, disorienting and delightful, the MJT was honored with a MacArthur Genius Grant in 2003, and is a must-see for anyone who loves the bizarre. Make sure to try the tea upstairs.
