Discovering Ghosts of a Lost Nazi Compound in the City of Angels
Tucked away in the canyons of the Pacific Palisades lies a haunting piece of California history. As you descend the winding road near the glamorous neighborhood of Brentwood, a wrought-iron gate beckons. Beyond it stand the crumbling remains of Murphy’s Ranch. Local lore tells of a wealthy married couple persuaded by a Nazi spy, Herr Schmidt, into building a multi-million dollar utopian Nazi society. It was at one time home to 30-40 of Schmidt's disciples. Following the Pearl Harbor bombing, the FBI raided the compound. Schmidt was arrested and so the compound’s disintegration began. The war between nature and the constructs of man continues today in full color as bougainvillea swallow the twisted structures erected for a history never come to fruition.
