Seeing Ghosts in Mud Island, Pennsylvania
Standing by the smithy in the waning dusk, you startle to the distant screams of an old woman. You glimpse a faceless figure walking the parapet, who suddenly disappears. Welcome to Mud Island, where these and other ghosts are said to wander. Located on the Philadelphia banks of the Delaware River, this home to historic Fort Mifflin—“The Fort that Saved America” and the only fully intact battlefield from the Revolutionary War. I went to explore the restored buildings and to picnic among wildflowers, but so many go seeking paranormal encounters that Syfy’s Ghost Hunter Academy set its premiere there. If you prefer friendly ghosts, visit in December for a Soldier’s Christmas, when you can sip hot cider while military “spirits” describe their long-ago Mud Island Yuletides.
