Did you ever want to just get away from everything and everyone? Montauk Point Lighthouse on a clear winter's day is the perfect retreat. The crowds of summer have gone, the leaf peepers have settled into their routines of school and work. The solitude of a leisurely stroll on a windswept beach where no other person has tread before you is awe-inspiring. A time to reflect and regenerate your psyche after the rigors of a week in the office. The roar of the surf, the scream of the gulls, and the whisper of the cold ocean breezes all work in concert to clear the cobwebs of deadlines and bring peace and center back into your harried life.
On my first trip to the Montauk Lighthouse, in Montauk, NY I had such an awesome view of this structure from the seaside. Capturing the essence and beauty of the Montauk Lighthouse using asymmetric composition and light mix was quite amazing. Incorporating the entwined twigs in the photo, at the right angles, gave the impression that they were resting and surrounding it. What a fine, sunny day it was of photographing this magnificent landmark, a day I will never forget.
Montauk, the neglected little sister to the overpriced grandiosity of the Hamptoms, is a perfect little oasis escape for residents of the tri-borough area. Known to many as simply "that beach town where that artsy Jim Carey movie was shot" is one of the Northeast's best kept gems. Overrun by lazy surfer types, there is an abundance of nature - the city being home to not one, but three, state parks. The beaches are planked one side by massive sand dunes and on another by tall, daunting cliffs that shadow the beach and provide a myriad of lookout points and concave hideouts. But the real selling factor of this adorable little beach town is the authenticity of its residents and the city at large. It seems to have never escaped the grasp of the 1970's and exists solely in its own little world, lit by floating lantern candles on the beaches in the evenings and children snapping pop rocks in the quaint little town square during the day. Fancying a laid-back beach retreat? Forget the Hamptoms and opt for the real deal, instead.
