Dropping in on the Local Surf Scene in Brooklyn, New York
The neighborhood of Greenpoint in Brooklyn isn’t exactly a surfer’s paradise. But thanks to Mollusk Surf Shop, it has become a base camp of sorts. Mollusk is where Brooklyn’s hipster surfers go before ditching the endless concrete of the five boroughs in search of shelter under a curling wave. The shop is a haven, with boards, gear, clothes and plenty of DVDs to help aficionados get through the long winter. As you step inside, you'll inevitably hear voices—just like the shops in more prominent surfing locales—trading stories plays a significant role. Take some time to hang, soak up the rootsy vibe, ask about the type of wetsuit you’ll need (spoiler alert: a thick one) and where to eat after your session. Your closest breaks may not be Pipeline, Trestles, or Bells Beach—but as they’ll tell you at Mollusk: “Even a bad day in the water is better than a good day on land.”
