Reaching for the Shawangunks’ Longest View in Gardiner, New York
It’s easy to lose yourself in the outsize, Thomas Cole-worthy views atop the 1,200-foot-high ridgeline of the Shawangunk Mountains. But when you’re getting there the authentic way—hand over hand, foot over foot up a sheer cliff, secured by 10mm of nylon—it’s best to focus on the task at hand. The ’Gunks, as climbers know them, have more routes (1,200+) than any other climbing area in the eastern United States, and you can access most of them for a mere $15 at Mohonk Preserve, six miles out of New Paltz. Hit the rock early on a crisp fall weekend, and then sweeten the deal with a wholesome lunch at the quirky, and insanely busy, Main Street Bistro.
