Looking Backwards and Forwards at a Cinematheque in Miami Beach, FL

This is no movie theater. It’s a cinematheque, and the name says it all. At once foreign and familiar, it’s a sexy art house/movie house hybrid with a plush red curtain that sweeps back to reveal classic cinematic gems, rather than plotless popcorn flicks. Speaking of popcorn, theirs isn’t saturated in a synthetic butter that you pump, though it can come covered in rich white chocolate. The charming little building, the former historic City Hall, looks to the past with 1926 Spanish Mediterranean architecture, while ongoing green efforts, such as construction using reused Dade Pine and hi-def digital downloads rather than prints, look to the future. Stop in for photo exhibitions, restored films, and art films and documentaries you won’t find in—what are they called again? Oh. “Movie theaters.”
