Hunting for Treasure at the Portales Market in Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico City is full of treasures, and not just in its architecture and museums: real treasure, of the pirate variety. Finding it is the challenge. Try your luck at the flea market or Bazar Reto ("Challenge Bazaar") in the surrounding streets outside the market just a few blocks from the metro station Portales. In the informally organized stands, you can find everything from pure junk (here you’ll realize what “real” junk is) to one-of-a-kind antiques, if you have a good eye (rumor has it that much of the Museo del Estanquillo’s collection was acquired here over the years). Rifle through old photographs, dangling gold chains, and bejeweled pocket watches—often in need of repair, impossible-to-find camera models, and antique furniture priced from one peso to well into the thousands. Find a bargain and take a small piece of Mexican history, straight from Porfirio’s desk drawer, back home with you.
