Maude's Classic Café, located in Gainesville's downtown in the shadow of the Hippodrome, is an ideal place to people watch or study. Maude’s took its name after its next-door-neighbor, Harold’s Frames & Gallery—the reference to the cult film was too irresistible to pass up. It’s that same mindset that permeates the entirety of Maude’s, whose menu features light bites with clever, pop-culture influenced names and homemade baked goods. Downtown Gainesville has free wifi, Maude’s shelves are stocked with board games and the coffee is strong, but not bitter. Expect a standard counter-service coffee menu (though in deferring to the “Starbucks phenomenon,” if you want an authentic latte, tell your barista—chain-store coffee has trained many palates not to expect foam). Maude’s tea selection is fairly comprehensive, for those preferring "the gentleman's coffee." Did I mention that Maude's is located directly across the street from a Starbucks? What better way to stick it to the man than to drink local coffee?
