Observing Manatees in Unusual Places in Apollo Beach, Florida
White streams of puffy clouds plump fat with gases flowing upward into the sky indicating that your search for aquatic wildlife is about to be rewarded. The discharge canal of an industrial plant might seem a rather unlikely refuge for marine mammals. During Florida’s cool winters, however, manatees seem to really enjoy frolicking in the warm waters beside the Tampa Electric Company power plant. Stand on the observation deck where you’re sure to see plenty blue-gray manatee backs resembling large stones floating around. Wait patiently with your camera ready and you may be lucky enough to capture their heads as they bob up for a breath of fresh winter air. Stroll around the deck to learn more about the manatees—and the environmentally friendly electric company—from posted signs at this free attraction.
