Mae Sa Valley — Phillip Orchard Like

Touring Thailand (All in One Place) in the Mae Sa Valley, Chiang Mai

One mountain road—15 tourist traps. Sound irresistible? You see the advertisements all over Chiang Mai: Snake Farm, Tiger Kingdom, Monkey Show (invariably in descending order of the possibility of death), Extreme Sports Center, Elephant Camp, Waterfall, Orchid and Butterfly Farm (poisonous — don’t eat), Long Neck (?) Ethnic Village, Botanical Gardens, Mountaintop Temple. See them all for just a five-dollar taxi ride up the Mae Sa Valley Road. It’s easy tourism, and the hordes of pink-skinned sightseers might send you searching for something more obscure. But elephants built Thailand, snakes keep it dangerous, temples define the culture, and orchids make it beautiful. And if you only have a day to see all the elements that make Thailand memorable in one place, this road just might do the trick.
