Honoring Lucy the Elephant in Margate, New Jersey
This is one elephant no family member can ignore. Lucy the Margate Elephant is a wooden, 65-foot tall, 90 ton, howdah sporting elephant--a wonderful example of Jersey Shore kitsch. Lucy proudly stands facing The Atlantic Ocean as visitors enter her hind leg, en route to tour her fully restored interior. Constructed in 1881 as a tourist attraction, Lucy has remained as such despite a brief segue into being used as a private home and then tavern. She’s survived hurricanes, a fire and a two block move. In 1976 Lucy was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours of Lucy’s interior are only available May through mid-June.
