Hiking Long Ridge Road in La Honda, California
Moss-covered trees hide a trailhead sign and expansive views from those speeding down Skyline Boulevard. Find the trailhead across the street from a small Skyline turnout about 1.8 miles north of Highway 9. Trees open up to hilly grasslands less than a mile up the trail. Hike or bike Long Ridge Road, sharing the wide dirt path with few others. Relax on the Wallace Stegner bench with a snack and a book—Stegner’s The Big Rock Candy Mountain, perhaps—and take in views stretching to the ocean on a clear day. When ready for more, wind down the ridge, descend into the forest, and connect to Peters Creek Trail to follow a tranquil, fern-lined stream. Complete a five-mile loop by returning to Long Ridge then back down Hickory Oaks Trail. Emerge from the woods stealthily so casual Skyline drivers don’t discover and overcrowd the obscured ridge.
