Experiencing the Real Underground in Atlanta's Little Five Points

Eclectic, alternative, and trendy, Little Five Points is a mishmash of Atlanta’s urban subcultures located near Euclid and Moreland Avenues. Not to be confused with Five Points downtown (the home of the over-hyped Underground), L5P’s shops, restaurants, and bars cater to tastes that are a little more left of center. Have a pint and a nosh at the Porter, the area’s popular brew pub. Get lost in Junkman’s Daughter, a giant novelty-slash-vintage-slash-head shop. Search for your soul at Mood’s Music —where owner Darryl can hip you to the latest and greatest in neo soul and acid jazz finds. Check out a live performance at Seven Stages Theater or hear an indie music act at the Variety Playhouse. Or, just find a comfy spot for people watching. Skateboarders, street performers, and tattooed and pierced pedestrians offer plenty to gawk at, day or night.

If you could take just one photo: Little Five Points

Every large American city has its alternative enclaves, a place where misfits and musicians, artists and hemp peddlers make their home. Atlanta, the Southeast's booming metropolis is no different. Little Five Points neighborhood on Moreland Ave is a small but concentrated habitat for Atlanta's "misfits." No other neighborhood in metro Atlanta is a farther cry from the fast-paced business and slow-moving traffic so characteristic of the ATL. Visitors to this exciting area are recommended to try a meal at The Vortex, a raucous but tasty burger joint complete with vintage decor and a motorcycle hanging from the ceiling. For the music lover or comic book conoisseur, Criminal Records boasts a varied collection of CDs, DVDs, magazines, comic books, and Vinyl. And for dessert, head over to Zesto's for some classic tasty soft serve. There are plenty of engaging diversions packed into the few blocks that make up Little Five Points. Atlanta-dwellers and out-of-towners alike will appreciate this neighborhood for its colorful change of pace.
