Spotting Orcas From Lime Kiln Point in Washington
Natural beauty? Check. Sweeping panorama? Check. Orcas? Check! Lime Kiln Point could just as well be called Whale Watching Point. Just minutes prior to setting foot on the main vista point, the local orca pod had breached a mere 20 feet offshore. According to the kind and knowledgeable rangers in the gift shop, the depth of the water is unique in this particular spot. The cetaceans hug the coastline as they traverse the length of the island, making it one of the best locations in the world to whale watch. Washington laws prevent boats from being within 200 yards of the animals, so better to make the trek to San Juan Island for a chance at a more intimate encounter.
