Slurping Popsicles in the Parking Lot in Nashville, Tennessee
Las Paletas, a sterile little storefront in the trendy 12 South District is nothing more than several freezer cases of gourmet Mexican popsicles and a chalkboard. No sign or advertising is needed; the refreshing flavors lure customers to the funky Art Deco-style Cypress Building, where they loiter in the parking lot (no seating in the store), savoring rainbow-colored fruit pops such as strawberry, grapefruit, and tamarind. Silky, cream-based confections include chai tea, avocado, chocolate banana, coffee, and granola. House specialties are sweets with heat, including pineapple, chocolate or cucumber with chili, and florals like hibiscus and rose petal. Flavors change often, based on available produce. The owners know their stuff; ask Bobby Flay who lost a Throwdown to them. Bring cash or checks; no credit cards accepted.
