Delving Into the Tribal Experience in Sapa, Vietnam
Sapa is well-worth every heart-stopping hairpin turn and washed-away edge of the road on the long trip from Hanoi. In Lao Cai, the northernmost province of Vietnam, the one that seems to groan beneath the belly of China, Sapa is a picturesque village that was the heart of the old Colonial hill station. Travel beyond the town and the rewards are rich. Hill people from an array of tribes, adorned with riotous color and unexpected body ornaments, are touched by a stranger’s interest in their culture, and the lucky tourist may even be asked to share in their celebrations. It’s a place to be awed by glimpses of lifestyles so diverse, and, in ways, not so very different.
