Kayaking on the Sparkling Waters of Lake Del Valle in Livermore, CA
Who knew you could kayak on a calm cobalt blue lake off the beaten path in the hot and dry inner East Bay of San Francisco? If you live in the Bay Area, chances are you've overlooked the nondescript city of Livermore as a nearby weekend refuge. About 10 miles south of downtown in Arroyo Del Valle, Lake Del Valle offers swimming beaches, picnicking, camping, hiking on more than 4,000 acres, and, of course, kayaking on a serene, crystal lake. The narrow lake, nestled in a valley, has bays and small coves in which you can paddle into and explore. Aside from the motorized boats zooming by at times, your kayak is free to meander along the lake's glistening surface, and you quickly forget you're in the East Bay.
