Catching les Vibes at a Surf Retreat in Hourtin, France
The sweeping Atlantic coast from Biarritz to the Estuary La Gironde boasts a profound and unique beauty. Fragrant pine forests march right up to the sandy streets of beach towns like Hourtin-Plage and Montalivet-les-Bains. I don't know much about surfing, but I'll say this: the surfers here are as happy a bunch as I've ever met, living a life where everything is provided: sun, surf...and well, they might need some cash, which is why tanned surf-rat Christian opened La Ferme de la Brousse (“the farmhouse in the bushes”). He's got an outdoor kitchen to take your barbecue to the next level, and at least a solid acre of grass to play frisbee or whack golf balls into the open countryside, and it's just a few minutes' drive to the local pizza spot and hundreds of kilometers of sprawling, clean beach.
