Discovering a New World Viking Village in L'anse aux Meadows, Canada
Stepping out of the visitor’s center and into the wind on this misty day, with the smell of the sea all around, I felt as though not much had changed here since the Vikings landed in what was, to those Europeans, an unknown world. Even today there is very little development to be seen. The reconstructed Viking longhouse at this (the first) UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a dramatic opportunity to imagine how life was like here 1,000 years ago. A Viking longboat would not seem out of place among the craggy coastline and tiny islands that dot this remote corner of the Earth. It still feels primeval and open to discovery.
